Nita Chen is currently a Movement Disorders Fellow at the University of Florida Movement and Neurorestoration Program. She is a medical student in the class of 2017 at Albany Medical College. To become cultural, she spent her early years of study in Taiwan and truly enjoyed the wonderful Taiwanese cuisine and milk tea, thus ruining her appetite for the rest of her life in the United States. In addition to her majors in neuroscience and cognitive science during her undergraduate career, she locked herself in her bedroom writing silly fictional stories, doodling and playing the piano. Or she could be found rocking like a gigantic science nerd in various labs. Now she hides in her room to study most of the time.

Nita Chen, MD, Movement Disorders Fellow at the Normal Fixel Institute for Neurological Disease, contributes to this piece of graphic medicine as a former editor-in-training, editor, columnist, and featured artist for our print book-in-training: Stories of doctors of tomorrow, Volume 2.

Fully grasping the breadth of the medical humanities is simply not possible. In fact, it’s all too easy for the medical community not to appreciate all the ways in which the humanities not only complement, but enhance medicine. Medicine – such a biological and chemical field – is often associated with much more rigidity than where the humanities allow the mind to go.
