Online shopping surges 16.8% in August amid pandemic

SEOUL, Oct 5 (Korea Bizwire)Online shopping in South Korea was up 16.8% from a year earlier on strong demand for food and grocery delivery services amid the protracted pandemic, data showed on Tuesday.

The value of online shopping transactions was 15.8 trillion won ($ 13.3 billion) in August, up from 13.5 trillion won the year before, according to Statistics Korea data.

August’s figure fell from a record 16.2 trillion won in July, but the value of online purchases reached more than 15 trillion won for the sixth consecutive month.

Amid an economic recovery and tighter virus restrictions, online shopping for goods and services has gained traction, driven by demand for food, food delivery and electronics, the agency said.

Purchases made through smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices increased 22.8 percent year-on-year to 11.5 trillion won in August. Mobile purchases accounted for 72.7% of the total value of online purchases.

Online transactions in food delivery services grew 44.3% year-on-year to 2.4 trillion won, and those in food and beverage products increased 30.8% to 2.15 billion won .

Purchases of electronics increased 13.7 percent year-on-year to 1.86 trillion won on the back of demand for home appliances.

Online purchases of travel-related services rose 0.8 percent to 803 billion won in August.
