All students enrolled in online courses must meet the appropriate technical requirements. The University of Nevada, Reno uses Canvas (called WebCampus in our university) for its online courses. Students enrolled in online courses will need access to a computer, internet access, and a supported web browser.
Use WebCampus
Your course site will contain instructions on how to submit assignments, access the discussion forum, and use other WebCampus features. Assignments are due on specific days and times, and all proctored exams must be taken within the allotted time. Technical problems are not considered valid excuses for submitting late work. WebCampus is accessible from any computer with Internet access. If you are having technical problems on your personal computer, you have the option of using a co-worker’s or family member’s computer, a computer on campus or at a public library, etc. It is also your responsibility to ensure that certain assignments are submitted correctly and received by your instructor.
Using the Canvas app vs. browser access
We strongly recommend that you access your course through a mobile browser or a browser on a laptop or desktop computer. The Canvas app for mobile devices is not compatible with the following programs used by the University, which may be used in your course:
- Proctorio and Examity – used for proctored exams
- Course reserves—used by the library for items placed on electronic reserve
- Kaltura—streams video lectures
- McGraw-Hill Connect, Pearson MyLab, Wiley-Plus, WebAssign—assignment management programs provided by publishers
This means that if your class has proctored exams, eReserve items, lesson videos, and/or the use of homework management programs, you will not be able to access these materials using the Canvas app for mobile devices. The university allows equipment to be borrowed. Please see the library’s Loanable Technology webpage for more information.
Technical skills
Motivation and organization are necessary skills for online learning. Students must organize themselves for every aspect of the class, including submitting assignments by the given deadlines and scheduling and taking tests by the given deadlines. Although online courses offer a flexible study modality, the rules for passing are rigid. Therefore, no accommodation can be made when students deviate from the expectations stated on the course site.
If you are enrolled in an online course, it is assumed that you have the basic computer skills necessary to participate in and complete an online course. Knowing how to use email and navigate the Internet is essential. Knowing your computer, its programs, and its operating system will help you succeed as an online student. Students should be able to send messages to their instructor, download attachments, post assignments, communicate with other students, and navigate the course site. Your instructor should not be considered a technical tutor for the class.
