Former US President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced he was launching a new media company with his own social media platform, after being banned from Twitter and suspended from Facebook after his supporters stormed the Capitol American.
Trump Media & Technology Group and its “TRUTH Social†app are creating a rival to the big tech companies that shut it out and denied it the megaphone that was essential to its national rise.
“I created TRUTH Social and TMTG to resist the tyranny of Big Tech. We live in a world where the Taliban have a strong presence on Twitter, but your favorite US president has been silenced. This is unacceptable, “Trump said in a statement, adding that the platform was” founded with the mission of giving voice to all.
“I’m excited to start sharing my thoughts on TRUTH Social and fighting BIg Tech soon. Everyone asks me why nobody stands up to Big Tech? Well, we will be soon! Trump said in a statement.
Trump and his team of advisers have hinted for months that he could launch his own social media app to compete with Facebook and Twitter.
According to the press release, TRUTH Social is currently available for pre-order in the Apple App Store, and a beta will be available to guests from November 2021. A nationwide rollout is expected in the first quarter of 2022, the statement said.
The statement also said TMTG intends to launch a subscription-based video-on-demand service that would include “non-awakened†entertainment, news and podcast programming.
Trump at war with Facebook, Twitter
Earlier this month, lawyers for the ex-president filed a lawsuit asking a Florida federal judge to force Twitter to reestablish his account, arguing the social media giant was “coerced” by Democrats in Congress to permanently ban Trump from the platform in January. 6 riot.
In a separate lawsuit, the former president also asked the court to restore his Facebook account, arguing that Facebook “threatened to do irreparable damage to the prospects of the Republican Party in the elections of 2022 and 2024”.
Social media companies have come under pressure throughout Trump’s presidency to ban him, with his posts being criticized as insulting, inflammatory or peddling outright lies.
Last year, Twitter and Facebook started deleting some of his posts or calling them misleading, like the one in which he said Covid was “less deadly” than the flu.
They made the decision to ban or suspend Trump after the January riots, which followed a speech in which he made baseless allegations of electoral fraud.
Earlier this year, he launched From the Desk of Donald J Trump, often referred to as a blog.
The website was shut down for good within a month of launch after attracting only a fraction of the audience it might have expected through established sites.
His main assistant Jason Miller said it was “just an adjunct to the larger efforts that we are leading and working on.”
